Can You Hear Me Now? Good.
This is Dr. Martin Cooper of the Motorola company. He is credited with the invention of the cell phone. In fact, he's holding the first cell phone ($3,500.00 when it came out in 1983) called the "Motorola DynaTAC 8000X." The first cellular telephone call was made by Cooper in 1973 to his rival across the street at Bell Labs, Joel Engel. Perhaps you recognize this phone from watching Saved By The Bell. It's the phone that preppy, Zach Morris regularly used. As interesting as this may be, I like giving credit where credit is due. Dr. Cooper was not the first one to invent the cell phone or make the first call. ===>
I clearly remember watching Maxwell Smart do that. I think Dr. Cooper was just rippin' off ideas of of television. So where does this come from, Miguel? Where the hell are you going with this??? I shall tell you, faithful reader.
Well, I was buying S.O. a new phone the other day and I noticed that there were two couples there getting phones for the family. I mean, one dad was getting 5 phones! The other was just getting 3. Each had kids as young as ten getting phones.
Are you kidding me??? Back when I was a kid, we were expressly forbidden to even answer the house phone! Man, times are changing. And that may be a good thing, or not, depending on the subject.
******************UPDATE***************************
And the other thing I was thinking about was that every generation thinks that they are so original, or superior in some way. What they don't realize is that history repeats itself more often than not. Fashions, hairstyles, a bunch of things...they've been used before. For example:
Not too long ago, I was watching one of those dance movies at a car maintenance shop's waiting room. I was pretty bored and unfortunately, there was no control for the tv. Besides it was a movie that jut kept playing over and over. Not sure what it was called...but they're pretty much all the same. Anyway, there were a couple of teenage kids there too and they were really into the movie. They were dancing along with the tv! I gotta tell you, I was thoroughly entertained! Anyway, we got to talking and they were both learning how to Crip Walk (or C walk). Being from LA, I was very familiar with it and even knew how to dance it myself...ha! Just kidding. I'd never heard of it before. My experience has been limited to pole dancing for sweaty men in a smoke filled bar...okay, maybe that's not true either. I've never been much of a dancer...not because I lack rhythm or coordination, but because dancing in clubs was considered slippin' in times past, and I've never let down my guard like that...anyway, my point:
Look familiar? And I was watching that in the 70's! This is nothing new. By the way, I loved that show! They need to bring The Gong Show back on the air!

Did you hear that they have a new "Get Smart" movie coming out soon?
OMG, I was first... *THUD*
Ahhh, phones while growing up... Party Lines (some interesting conversations which you weren't part of), dialing only 4 numbers... wall mounted, phone cord, no mobility. LOL
Hugs'n'Smooches!
Oh, and we had a 10 minute "father" imposed talk limit.. we had to set the timer on the stove for 10 minutes... when the timer went off we were supposed to get off the phone.. And we kids were only allowed 2 calls per day.
Now I am content not having a phone and most times don't even answer the cell phone which is my only phone.
That fetus scares me.
Daddy's been talking about getting me (well, and mommy and the younger bro) a new phone for quite a while now, but he never follows through - which I guess is for the best, cuz we're not a family that likes talking on the phone.
I don't see why kids in elementary/middle schools need phones. Do they really need to call for rides so frequently? Why can't friends call the landlines? Getting hooked on txting that early's also not a great idea.
Great post! I always loved his shoe! We had a party line and our ring was two long ans a short, there were three families on our line and the one family listened in all the time!!
Did you photoshop the fetus?
My sister, both of my parents, and I all have a cell phone. It's pretty vital for our communication since we're rarely in the same place at the same time.
We had a seafoam princess dial phone until around 1990 in my mom's home. It had this weird old fashioned plug (total old school) and we had no calling features. Everyone else had two-way and three-way. Hey remember "emergency phone calls?" hahahaha Oh man, i remember my mom used to do those and bawl my ass out when she'd call from work (swing shift). When she was home from work our phone never rang. Everyone was afraid to call and have my mom answer!
We all got new cells too, this holiday season. I switched back to Sprint (from At&T). And only my daughter, husband and me have one. When my 12 year old starts middle school he will get one, too. But for now, nah.
I'm back to say what i meant to say but ending up rambling my mouth off.
A good thing about my cellphone carrier is that they have this tracker now, so that i can track my loved ones. My daughter scoffed at the thought. But the way the world is today, i am all for it. Of course there are some sane solutions that i can think of but of course companies want to make money and so there we go spending...
OMG...that original mobile phone was CRAZY huge! Like a freakin SHOEBOX! Wonder how heavy it was?
You know, I got my first cell phone in the early 90's. Every time I talked on it (which wasn't much, because it was sooo expensive!) it got hot in just a few minutes and burned my ear.
When I wasn't grounded from using the phone (and that was rare), I could not receive calls after 8pm. I could not receive more than 2 calls per evening. I could not leave the kitchen, even though the super-long cord could reach almost any room in the house. And I couldn't talk longer than 15 minutes per call.
In a way, I'd like to get cell phones for my kids, but they really don't need them, and I know they are not responsible enough to keep up with one. If I got it for them, I'd just be doing it to keep up with the Joneses.
oh man, i know!
when the razor came out,
my eleven year old nephew had one
while i was still using my huge nokia
and my next phone still didn't have a camera
kids are lucky nowadays
and i dont think its a good thing
My parents let me use a cell phone when I started getting a life at 14.
I wasn't even allowed to use it unless I was leaving the house.
I got a phone when I was 16, so that if I drove my car into a ditch my parents could come pick me up.
Nowadays, it's only good for booty calls. Teehee.
i see no point for kids so young having phones... sure, they might go places, but since when is a 10 year old kid allowed to go to the mall or movies or whatever by him/herself?? if they need to talk to their friends so bad, they can use the house phone. i think that kids should get their own cell phones when they start driving, especially since so many things can go wrong with cars and they might not be around a gas station or something to use that phone. although the one girl up there had a good point, maybe when they get into high school but only when they go somewhere and not just to bring around at school.
I refuse to buy my kids phones.. They are teenagers.. If I dont know where they are, then there is a problem.. They dont need a phone for me to keep them in check.. thats fuh shaw..
Hey, Happy New Year Miguel..
i have friends who has a 6 year old that has his own phone. he has had it since he was 4.
My 11-year-old nephew just got a cell phone. I don't think that it was necessary. Only when my kids are old enough to drive and venture out on their own would I want them to have a cell phone so I, and they, can be reached in case of an emergency (and so I can check up on their whereabouts of course).
It's weird seeing little kids with phones now. Cell phones didn't become widely used until I was in high school, and in the beginning, it was the coolest thing ever to have one since they were so rare. Once I graduated, everyone had one, and now everyone in 5th grade has one!
answer the phone?? i wasn't even allowed to USE the phone til i was 16! then, i got five minutes!
My parents were the ONLY ones allowed to use the phone. When and if we were allowed, the phone was in the middle of the kitchen so privacy was out. As for cell phones, my daughter got one when she was making money to pay for it. Not before. I can't believe how many little kids have phones now. It's ridiculous. Your picture is not too far off base, which is kind of sad.
One of our grand kids spotted an old dial phone not too long ago and couldn't figure out how it worked.
it was three days ago, I walk into a friends house, there were five of us sitting in the living room. On the coffee table was six cell phones and two lap top computers, both of which were on and on line. and yes one land line.
"THIS IS MADNESS!"
I drive to work at @7 and see all these people on cell phones yammering, I don't want to talk to the voices in my own head that early let alone be in heavy conversation. And I remember attempting to dance like that in the 70's, mostly it just gave my friends headaches from laughing so much.
Kids have phones should still be forbidden....The text messages alone cost you hard........let alone the games and ring tones..........
I love Maxwell Smart..........They are coming out with another one.soon.
DAMN that C walk was crazy...you gotta weigh like 25 pounds to be able to move like that....I just finally learned how to lean like a cholo!
My Grandma still has one of those rotary phones and it takes me an hour to dial a number....first of all I dont remember anyones number anymore then my finger kept slippin so I would have to start all over again! ugh crazy to think that is all we use to have back in the day.
Great post Mig....have a wonderful New Years sweetie!
My sis and I were sitting in front of the arrival area at Love Field the other night waiting for my niece who's flight had been delayed. I started watching and noticed EVERYONE that walked by or was standing in front of the airport was on their cell phone. I was like...wtf? But then our conversation ended because my cell phone rang.
I long for the days when if you were gone shopping or somewhere...people simply waited until you got home to talk to you.
in japan almost all the school age kids have cells, my niece and nephew are few who don't. insanity. i have my cell with me all the time weither it is on or on silence most of the time is a different story. we were out to dinner the other nite and a phone rang (my husband and i had ours on silence- but had them, his for work mine for the kid- sitter) and so many people checked their phones and one commented that wasn't even my ring tone why did i answer. we just laughed and continued to eat. sometimes i forget mine on purpose oops..
have a relaxing new year
$3500 for a cell phone that big. Geesh!! So glad I'm not living in those days, I always have my cell phone around (Sprint Fusic) and text quite a bit... not too obsessively though. This post kind of reminds me of that commercial for ComCast and how we thought broadband was SOO fast to connect us to the internet, and now we can't even imagine what the Internet would be like if we went back to that slow connection of broadband. Technology is moving a bit fast, once something comes out.. another company makes a better version of it and the previous is no longer "cool" enough. Ah!
Good post

You know , that is so true. And the 80s being back is the proof - shirts with large horizontal stripes, boots over jeans, big belts, huge necklaces.
Actually when being on the phone was a bigger deal people were a bit more judicious about how they spoke on the phone. Now, I would imagine there is less etiquette.
Ugh I remember the gong show, and I still am not sure how Chuck Barris survived being that coked out all the time. Ya know naybe there isn't a whole lot new under the sun these days, but I really don't mind the re-emergence of hip huggers, oh yeah they're loe rise jeans now. lol
I don't own a cell phone, but my nephew's 7 yr old kid does! Go figure.
I used to love The Gong Show! Gene, Gene the dancing machine.
hahaha. that is so funny. damn this history. its like we humans will never change. i wonder y the music seperates old and young.
